Human society is beset with an ever expanding schism between modern paradigms of development and the needs of environment. A civilisation thriving on individual-oriented development paradigm based on greed and giving primacy to profit over people is bound to give rise to an unequal society and a battered environment. A particularly worrisome aspect of this phenomena probably relates to the fact that the governments of the day are also either finding themselves helpless or they have deliberately chosen to side with the privileged rather than with the underprivileged sections of the society.
